Bryan Hauger Consulting, Inc. was formed to provide my specialist insights to plastic material manufacturers, converters and pipe system owners with a specialization in plastic pipe materials, extrusion support for manufacturers, joining of plastic piping and plastics testing. My background includes more than 20 years of experience including catalyst research in support of polyethylene manufacturing, additive stabilization of polymers, interaction of chemicals with plastics, extrusion production of plastic pipe, plastic pipe material technical service and plastic pipe system component testing. As a result of those efforts, I hold several United States patents, have published several technical papers and have authored two different technical standards for ASTM International. End use applications in which I am a plastics expert include corrugated plastic pipe, water distribution and plumbing systems, oil and gas production, plastic gas pipe, and conduit. I have taken on several clients as an expert witness on widely varying subjects relating to plastic piping. I participate in several industry organizations including API, SPE, PPI, CSA, AGA, AWWA and ASME. I provided more than a decade of service to the plastic pipe industry as the chair of ASTM F17.61 Subcommittee on Water Piping Systems.
In contrast to others consulting on plastics for durable applications, my background is firmly rooted in chemistry. I obtained my Bachelor of Science degree from Hope College and my Ph. D. in Inorganic Chemistry from Indiana University. The specific focus of my research while at Indiana was on late transition metal organometallic catalysis. Under the direction of Ken Caulton, my graduate work resulted in several publications in support of my thesis “On the Importance of Ligand Lone Pairs for Late Transition Metal Complexes”. Beautiful La Jolla, California was the site of my post-doctoral work with Nobel laureate Dr. K. Barry Sharpless at Scripps Research Institute during a period of rapid development of osmium catalyzed asymmetric aminohydroxylation of olefins.
Joining Phillips Petroleum Company in 1996, my catalyst research work turned to single-site catalysis of olefin polymerization and resulted in several patents in just a few years. The next role with Phillips was as a Polymer Stabilization Chemist participating in additive package formulation to support Phillips’ domestic manufacturing and international licensing of ethylene slurry loop polymerization. Shortly after the establishment of Chevron Phillips Chemical Company, I served the Polyethylene Technical Service group in several roles. Much of the next decade was spent providing technical support to pressure pipe and corrugated pipe companies on a host of issues including new product introductions, management of change, complaint resolution, product fabrication and testing advice, and codes and standards interpretation.
In 2012, my family and I moved to Longmont, Colorado to join Microbac Laboratories, Inc. Hauser Division as their Technical Director. Until leaving the company in 2014, the work at Hauser included directing and coordinating activities of a technical team to prepare test reports on plastic materials and piping system components, products, and assemblies. I also provided consulting services on a broad array of technical projects including plastic materials testing and codes/standards revisions.
