Methane Leaks from Pipelines Noted as Particularly Concerning in the Northeastern US
This article highlights findings from a paper titled "Fugitive methane emissions from leak-prone natural gas distribution infrastructure in urban environments" and published in the journal Environmental Pollution. The paper finds that 7% of the leaks contributed 50% of the total methane lost to the environment. Additionally, the paper reports that 15% of the leaks are "potentially explosive".

Antec 2016 Agenda Posted for Plastic Pipe and Fittings SIG
There are two sessions at the upcoming ANTEC meeting of the Society of Plastics Engineers focusing on Plastic Pipe and Fittings during the conference scheduled for May 23 to 25 at the JW Marriott in Indianapolis.
The first session will be from 130 PM to 530 PM on Monday May 23rd. This session is jointly hosted by the Failure Analysis and Prevention SIG as well as the Plastic Pipe and Fittings SIG. The joint session will feature keynote speaker Professor Alexander Chudnovsky with a presentation titled "Limitations of Existing Standards in Assessment of PE Pressure Pipe Lifetime in Brittle Fracture". Several additional speakers will address topics such as slow crack growth, fatigue failures, and fracture toughness of plastic materials. The session will be followed by the presentation of the Myer Ezrin Best Paper Award.
The second session will be from 100 PM to 600 PM on Tuesday May 24th. This session is hosted by the Plastic Pipe and Fittings SIG and will feature Professor Ian Moore with his keynote address titled "Design and Performance of Bell and Spigot Joints for Thermoplastic Pipes". Additional speakers will address topics such as color masterbatches, piping remediation options, plastic plumbing applications, and antioxidant stabilization of piping.
I look forward to seeing you in Indianapolis for what is sure to be the best conference on plastic pipe and fittings applications in North America for 2016!

Building Owner and Others Indicted for Tampering with Gas Line
A very sad story about the one-year anniversary of an apartment explosion in the East Village of New York City. New laws are being proposed and four people, the owner of the building, her son, a contractor and a plumber, are indicted for manslaughter and other charges. A vigil was held for the victims of the blast while families were promised that the city will increase inspections in order to avoid such needless loss of life in the future.
