HDPE and Composite Pipe Training for Oil, Gas, and Water
PPI, in cooperation with North Dakota Petroleum Council, will be holding a two day seminar on April 11th and 12th. “This is our second regional seminar so far in 2019 that will explain how to design and properly install pipelines that carry oil & gas and transport water to and from a fracking site,” stated Randy Knapp, Ph.D., engineering director of the Energy Piping Systems Division of PPI. “This is very important, mainly because pressures in a high-density polyethylene pipeline in the oil patch can reach 300 psi and temperatures up to 180F, or even higher pressures when using polyamides or spoolable composites. Among other topics, this seminar will also provide hands-on fusion training, which is critical to the performance of a pipeline.”
Day one will be focused on plastic pipe systems and their design, installation, testing, and repair of such systems. This seminar is limited to 60 participants. Day two will focus on fusion training of plastic pipes and participants will receive a PPI certificate at the end. The second seminar is limited to 24 participants. Both seminars will have experts present from McElroy, Wl Plastics, Performance Pipe, Pipeline Plastics, Shawcor Composites, ISCO industries, Victaulic, LyondellBasell, and Dow Chemical.

Uponor Launches New Pipe Monitoring System
Phyn, a joint venture between Uponor and Belkin International, have launched a new pipe monitoring system that can help home owners prevent costly pipe failures and freezing. The device integrates with homes and fits nicely into the existing “internet of things” industry. It can automatically shut off if a significant failure occurs and can alert homeowners if a leak is detected. The device pairs with an app on mobile phones and will alert homeowners of any issue with their piping. This venture is about 21 months old and is just now launching into test markets. Phyn will certainly be a money saver for all homeowners as pipe failures cause a substantial amount of damage to homes every year.

Chicago's Corroding Gas Pipe is Being Replaced
Chicago has an underground gas pipe network that connects to nearly 800,000 homes and dates back to the mid 1800s. It is currently a metal pipe that is suffering from severe corrosion and requires replacement as soon as possible. The Peoples Gas System Modernization Program is aware of this and are working to replace 2,000 miles of this old gas line with new, safer plastic pipe. This massive overhaul is expected to cost nearly $7 Billion and is causing rate hikes for customers in the area.
