Ocean Cleanup's "Wilson" Could Reduce Garbage Patch by 50% over 4 years.
Ocean Cleanup's "Wilson" Could Reduce Garbage Patch by 50% over 4 years.
This HDPE and polyester setup invented by Ocean Cleanup is showing promise for the removal of plastic waste from the ocean. It is reported that the unit named "Wilson" can remove up to a full metric ton of plastic per week. However, if this project is implemented on a large scale where more than 60 of these units are operating, the garbage patch could shrink by 50% every 5 years. When Ocean Cleanup reaches that level, each unit will be 600 meters long each and be able to withstand 5 meter waves. The way this unit functions is that the HDPE pipe floats on top of the surface with the polyester skirt below. The skirt forms a big U shape to capture plastic at the surface and a couple meters below. Another cool feature: the entire assembly can be recycled after its 20 year life span.
It's a great solution to a big problem in our Oceans and you can read more details by clicking here.

PPI Forms Committee Focused on Polypropylene Pipe
The Plastics Pipe Institute recently formed the Polypropylene Pressure Pipe Steering Committee (P4 SC) to respond to the challenges of rapid growth and to promote continued market acceptance of polypropylene pressure pipe in the North American market and Dr. Bryan Hauger is a member of this steering committee. "I was excited to be involved with this important committee from the start. There is a lot of work to be done to ensure the continued growth of this innovative product and our team is ready to help" said Dr. Hauger. The committee will focus on both of random copolymer polypropylene and polypropylene random copolymer with modified crystallinity and temperature resistance which are both regulated in North America through ASTM F2389 for hot- and cold-water potable plumbing systems as well as other applications. As its first action, this new technical committee spearheaded the preparation of the first PPI publication related to polypropylene (PP-R) pressure pipe. The document is titled “Proper Integration of Copper Tubing and Components with PP-R Piping Materials for Plumbing Applications” and provides information regarding the considerations of adding polypropylene pressure piping materials into an existing plumbing system which already includes copper piping. Ben Murphy Joins Bryan Hauger Consulting
Ben Murphy - a well-known and experienced fusion training specialist - has agreed to join the heat fusion joining team at BHC. Ben is a rising star in the heat fusion joining community as well as a McElroy Certified Instructor (Level III). Asked about his thoughts, Bryan Hauger offered "The addition of Ben to our growing team of McElroy Certified Instructors which includes Joe Paul and Jim Craig underlines our market position as the premier heat fusion training team in North American that is unaffiliated with any plastic pipe or equipment distribution company". The idea of operating independently should provide a simplistic working relations with any of the stakeholders in plastic pipe construction - either as inspectors for design/build or contracting firms, conducting training at the request of the distribution company, or providing on-site training to expand the capabilities of companies already offering their own heat fusion joining training. "We believe that Ben's additional skills developed during his time providing technical sales support while employed by McElroy and his knowledge on polypropylene piping should also be attractive to a broad range of potential clients" concluded Dr. Hauger. Bryan Hauger Consulting is a B2B firm specializing in plastic piping, materials and systems. They are currently scheduling heat fusion joining work during the fall, winter of 2018 and into the spring of 2019.

Extrusion 2018 Conference Features Technical Talks by Industry Experts
Plastics Technology will host a unique conference focused on the extrusion industry and covering a broad range of applications including compounding, film, sheet and various profiles including pipe. The conference will be held over three days in September in Cleveland and website has published the agenda. It is satisfying to see a number of our close industry contacts on the agenda. Notably, BHC Affiliate and long-time friend Kenneth Russell will be presenting as the co-author of a paper with Parker-Hannifin titled "Comparison of the Kneader and the Twin-Screw Extruder in Compounding TPV Materials". Steve Schick of Teel Plastics will discuss "Sizing of Extrudates: A Designer's Guide to Sizing Various Polymers". Charlie Martin of Leistritz will present his talk on "Managing Melt Temperature in a Twin Screw Extruder". Finally, Bob Bessemer of The Conair Group will be speaking on "Modifications to Medical Tanks to Minimize Water Issues from Bio-films, Endotoxins and Pyrogens". While other scheduled events will keep Dr. Hauger from attending personally, Bryan Hauger Consulting is currently seeking more affiliations with North American extrusion consultants or small consulting firms to serve growing client interests. If there is any interest in a discussion of cooperative opportunities in Extrusion Consulting, please contact Dr. Hauger by phone at 720-450-0798.
