Dominican Republic Blow Molder Explosion Caused by Gas Leak
On December 5th, one of the major blow molding factories in the Dominican Republic exploded due to a leak of liquid petroleum gas. This factory was one of the entire Caribbean's main suppliers of PET bottled and preforms. The head of the local fire brigade said that workers failed to turn off a boiler while the LPG was being delivered at the manufacturing plant. After that, the LPG seeped into a boiler and caught fire. It killed at least 4 people, wounded 40 others, and caused property damage in the surrounding area.

Ocean Cleanup's System 001 Needs Fine Tuning After Initial Test
The 2,000 ft long floating polyethylene pipe dubbed "system 001" is still being tested and fine tuned as it attempts to clean up plastic from the ocean. The world's first large scale ocean cleanup system has been doing well with its two week testing period. It has remained in its U shape in most cases and has held up well against the sea. It also successfully reoriented itself with wind and current patterns. However, it is losing some of its captured plastic due to wind and other issues concerning the ends of the system. It is also having troubles moving at the same speed as ocean currents. OceanCleanup plans to adjust the system and open the U to span a wider distance in order to combat these issues. They are hopeful this will help the newly found issues and lead to a large scale launch of multiple systems.
You can read additional details here about Ocean Cleanup's efforts and their 2,000 ft long polyethylene pipe system.

Prinsco Cuts 33 Jobs and Plans to Close HDPE Pipe Plant
Prinsco has decided to close its doors on the Appleton Wisconsin HDPE plant. It will cut 33 jobs as it relocates production to other facilities. Thankfully, Prinsco has offered Appleton workers a chance to move to other facilities. Prinsco was founded in 1975 and originally made concrete pipe but then transitioned to HDPE pipe and branded their pipes with a gold stripe to serve agricultural customers. It later expanded to civil construction and commercial/residential fields.
