Electro Scan Inc. Develops Innovative Leak Detection Technology
One of the world’s leading providers of machine-intelligent pipeline assessment products, Electro Scan Inc., has announced that it has completed a trial project of a new leak detection technology. The trial took place in Sydney, Australia where the company was invited down to demonstrate the features and benefits of their technology. Sydney Water manages about 13,800 miles of drinking water pipe systems and 16, 200 miles of sewer piping systems serving a population of 5.14 million people. Electro Scan’s Focused Leak Location (FELL) technology can evaluate sewer pipes ranging between 150mm to 400mm in diameter including clay, CIPP, earthenware, plastic, and Rib-Loc lined pipes. It uses a low voltage frequency current that is able to create an electric circuit between the inside of pipes and the surface to locate and measure any type of leak within the pipes. "We will use the findings from this trial to see if we can improve the way we test our new and rehabilitated pipelines and prioritize our repair strategies for existing wastewater pipelines," stated Jerry Sunarho, BEng MBus, Senior Engineer, Sydney Water, responsible for coordinating the project trial. Their technology is currently being evaluated in worldwide benchmark studies, including projects sponsored by the EPA, American Water Works Association, and more. They hope to become the leader in leak detection technology for both water and wastewater pipe systems.

New Jersey City Replaces Metal Gas Pipes with Durable Plastic Pipes
In South Plainfield, New Jersey the Public Service Enterprise Group (PSE&G) has almost finished its Gas System Modernization Program (GSMP). This project includes the replacement of more than 13 miles of cast iron and steel pipes with new, more durable plastic pipes. This work is part of a town-wide project to make gas delivery to local homes and businesses a lot safer, cleaner, and more efficient. While the work will not be finished until late 2020, and gas services to residents and businesses must be shut down while the work is being done, it is well worth the time and effort. Local city projects that involve becoming more sustainable will always be more beneficial in the long run.

Starbucks and McDonald's Plan to use Recyclable Coffee Cups
One of the world’s largest sources of non-recyclable waste is the takeaway coffee cup. 250 billion to-go cups that serve coffee and tea are produced every single year for huge corporations like Starbucks and McDonalds. They often are made with a plastic lining that makes them unable to biodegrade. In response to this huge waste of resources and large source of pollution, Starbucks and McDonalds created the NextGen Cup. NextGen Cup is a design competition where designers submit ideas for straws, cups, lids, etc. that can be used for a recyclable, reusable, or biodegradable takeaway coffee cup. There were 12 major winners of this competition where two pilot programs were launched in California last month. Customers were given “smart” reusable cups made from recyclable plastic and chips were installed so they can be tracked in specific collection containers. Cup Club was one of the winners and has already replaced millions of takeaway cups in the UK acting as a bike-share program but for coffee cups. There are many winners of this competition creating new sustainable innovations that are being implemented throughout the world. This huge stepping stone for environmental change and I hope these ideas are brought to complete fruition.

Modern Plastics Making Face Mask Shields in Response to Coronavirus
Modern Plastics is a shapes distributor and has responded to coronavirus with a brand new production of face shields for health care providers. The shields are made of glycol-modified PET and are currently being mass-produced. President Bing Carbone says, "I have been affected like everyone else in the world by this coronavirus pandemic," he said. "Rather than sit back and do nothing, we decided we need to do something to help all the men and women on the front lines; the healthcare professionals, first responders, and the doctors and nurses, especially right here in the state of Connecticut. Plastic facemask shields are in dire need and basically unobtainable." Modern plans on staying open and to gear up production during the shutdown and have already received an order from the state for 500,000 shields. Modern makes plastic shape products based on engineering and 60% of their sales come from the medical sector. They are happy and thankful to help squash this virus and get everyone back to somewhat of a normal life. Companies that are contributing in any way they can to help stop this virus are extremely important. I’m glad companies like Modern Plastics they are doing such a great job of helping the cause to fight the virus and also maintaining production all at the same time..
