Airlite Plastics Co acquires Stiles Manufacturing LLC
Airlite Plastics Co acquired Stiles Manufacturing LLC and their recycled HDPE pavers in hopes of increasing their HDPE selection. These two companies are drastically different in terms of customer segments and needs, but the two companies share the same values. Airlite believes that, by acquiring Stiles, they now have even more resources to better serve their existing customers. Stiles HDPE pavers are meant to reduce flooding and erosion for parking lots, driveways, fire lanes, and other special projects.

PVC Stiffness vs Fiberglass Stiffness
A common mistake is that PVC needs to be have a higher pipe stiffness to be equal to fiberglass pipe. When designing for a 100 years life, PVC usually is required to withstand 60% deflection while Fiberglass is supposed to withstand only 20% deflection. According to Diamond Plastics, “PVC by standard has a 7.5% recommended allowable deflection no matter what size or stiffness; whereas fiberglass has a limit of 3% due to deflection and strain limitations on its PS72 products,”

Pipeline Plastics Annouced New Expansion Plans
Pipeline plastics announced a manufacturing expansion to their Levelland operation in West Texas. This new expansion will add more extrusion lines. One high capacity extrusion line is particularly impressive with the capability to produce HDPE pipe from 12” to 36”. However, the biggest line on site goes up to a 65” diameter. According to pipeline plastics “Also included in the current expansion is the addition of a second 12” IPS to 36” IPS/DIPS (1,000mm) line to their Belle Fourche, SD operation. This line is expected to be operational in the first quarter of 2019, making additional product sizes available to the Midwest and Western U.S. In 2019 Pipeline Plastics will be starting up a new plant on the East Coast, with further details to be announced later this year.” Many of the executives are excited about this new growth. Let’s see some high quality pipe come out of there soon.

Another Call for Water Pipe Replacement with AWWA
AWWA says that America is currently in an era of pipe replacement. We have more than 1 million miles of water pipe beneath US soil which is really impressive. However, many sections are around 50+ years old. These pipes have reached the end of their life and it is vital we replace them. Our use of technology is much more advanced now and we have more standards and testing techniques to ensure safety and longevity. HDPE is often praised now for being the latest and greatest in water applications due to its durability and ability to handle higher pressures. It is great to see old pipes coming out and new, sustainable HDPE being placed in.
