January Sees Increase in Polypropylene Prices, Decrease in Polyethylene Prices
For the seventh consecutive month, prices of polypropylene have seen an increase, resulting in a 9 cent per pound hike of the material. On the other side of the material spectrum, lower demand for polyethylene caused its price per pound to drop by 3 cents. Polypropylene has had an interesting few months, as Hurricane Harvey’s damage in Texas has made the resin harder to come by for the time being. In addition, cold temperatures sweeping the south, as reported in our January Blog, led to production delays by several manufacturers in the Houston area. Combined with an increase in polypropylene demand, the overall price has increased by nearly 20 cents per pound since this past summer. It’s expected for the prices to start falling in February as production capabilities return to normal.

ASTM Plastic Piping Committee Week coming to San Diego in April
The next ASTM F17 Committee Week on Plastic Piping will be held at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina during the week of April 9th. This meeting presents a unique opportunity for users of ASTM plastic piping standards who are located in southern California to attend the meeting and participate in the consensus standards writing process. Although attendance at Committee Week is not a requirement for participation as a member in F17, end user participation is so heavily valued by F17 that the Paul Finn Memorial Fund was established, in part, to provide financial assistance to end users of plastic piping who wish to attend F17 meetings.
Many different user communities can benefit from attending this meeting. Professionals interested in the Cured-in-Place sewer rehabilitation industry will benefit from attending sessions hosted by the ASTM F17.67 sub-committee on Trenchless Plastic Pipeline Technology including task group meetings on ASTM F2561 “Standard Practice for Rehabilitation of a Sewer Service Lateral and Its Connection to the Main Using a One Piece Main and Lateral Cured-in-Place Liner”. Regulators, engineers and contractors working with natural gas utilities will be hosted by the ASTM F17.60 sub-committee on Gas Piping Systems including task group meetings on ASTM D2513 “Standard Specification for Polyethylene (PE) Gas Pressure Pipe, Tubing, and Fittings”. Plumbing inspectors and municipal water system engineers may attend sessions hosted by ASTM F17.61 sub-committee on Water Piping Systems including ASTM F877 “Standard Specification for Crosslinked Polyethylene (PEX) Hot- and Cold-Water Distribution Systems”. State DOT employees and municipal contractors working on drainage or sewer system installation would want to attend meetings hosted by either ASTM F17.62 on sewer or ASTM F17.65 land drainage. Please contact Dr. Bryan Hauger if you are interested in more information about attending the upcoming F17 meetings in San Diego. [email protected]
