The long awaited new Final Rule is Published. It is 21 pages long!
In today’s Federal Register, "PHMSA is amending the Federal pipeline safety regulations to incorporate by reference new, updated or reaffirmed editions of the voluntary consensus standards that are applicable to pipelines subject to the requirements of the Federal pipeline safety regulations. This final rule also makes non-substantive editorial corrections clarifying regulatory language in certain provisions". This final rule is effective March 6, 2015. This is an important reference for plastic gas pipe consultants.

New European Commission Trade Barriers on Chinese Glass Fibers Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) No 1379/2014 was published on December 16th, 2014. Votes were taken by EU Member States to support new anti-dumping duties up to 25-30% on imports from Chinese producers just after thanksgiving. My reading suggests that similar duties had been previously imposed in the past. The regulation is also full of interesting marketing information on glass fiber use in Europe and producers in China.

Quick and Helpful Composite Tensile Testing Advice
I found this article because the author is giving a seminar. If the article is any indication, the upcoming seminar by Dr. Daniel O. Adams is sure to be a great education to anyone who can attend. The discussion of the special considerations one must make when conducting a simple tensile test on unidirectional composite materials are well explained and complete. I doubt I can make it to the February seminar in Los Angeles. But I wish I could.

Plastic Pipe and ANTEC® 2015 Preliminary Program
I wanted to inform the plastic pipe community about the upcoming sessions and great papers focused on pipe during ANTEC® 2015. Three sessions are of particular interest to those in the plastic piping industry; Monday afternoon, Tuesday morning, and Wednesday morning. On Monday afternoon, check out the M34 session titled “Investigations of Materials and Test Methods for Plastic Pipe Systems”. On Tuesday morning, the session of interest is T12 titled “Plastics in Building and Construction”. On Wednesday morning, you won’t want to miss the very popular W6 session which is jointly hosted by Failure Analysis and Prevention & Plastic Pipes and Fittings. You can check for the preliminary program on the SPE website now.

Maryland Sinkhole Nearly Swallows Two Cars.
The annual ritual begins. In the spring, thawing and freezing finish off pipes that should have been replaced years ago. In this case, a 90 year old pipe failed. The story doesn’t say it, but a 90 year old pipe means it was definitely not a plastic pipe. Check out number of breaks in area. Why does the public tolerate this performance from the water utility?
